From wheel to kiln: the steps of a piece

Between a block of clay and a bowl on the table, several weeks go by. Here are the main steps, as they happen in the Giv’at Brenner studio.

Preparing the clay. The clay is wedged by hand to remove air and find the right softness. A forgotten air bubble can make a piece burst in the kiln.

Throwing. The piece is raised on the wheel, then left to firm up before being trimmed: the foot and profile are refined to lighten the form.

Glazing. After a first firing, the piece receives its glaze, applied by hand. This is where the variations of colour are born.

Firing. The second firing, at high temperature, sets the glaze and makes the piece sturdy, ready to be used. Firings are small: every kiln opening is a long-awaited moment.
