The studio

A wheel, a kiln and all the time it takes. At Giv’at Brenner, Ingrid Debard shapes every piece by hand, from raw clay to the final firing.

The spirit of the place

“A wheel, a kiln,
and all the time it takes.”

The place

A studio in the heart
of the kibbutz.

A large bright room, shelves of unfired pieces waiting their turn, the wheel in the middle and the kiln at the back. Everything happens here, and this is also where classes are held.

Pièces sur l’étagère de l’atelier

Unfired pieces dry slowly before the first firing.

Bol en strates de grès brut

A layered bowl: the strata of clay remain visible.

Jarre lune blanche craquelée

Out of the kiln, the surprises of the glaze.

Craft

Four steps,
no shortcuts.

01

Preparing the clay

The clay is wedged by hand to remove air and find the right softness.

02

Throwing

Each piece is thrown or hand-built one at a time, then trimmed once it has firmed up.

03

Glazing

Glazes are applied by hand: no two pieces are exactly alike.

04

Firing

Two small-batch firings, for sturdy pieces made to be used.
