Five families of pieces from the studio. The clays and glazes change, the hand stays the same.
Watercolour
Sky blue, sea green, lilac, a touch of yellow: the glazes overlap and melt into each other in the kiln, like a wash on paper. The pale clay shows at the rim and the foot. Gentle pieces for the everyday table.
Mingled clays
The pattern comes from the material itself. Grey, white, black and ochre clays meet in patches and marbling, like a map or a landscape seen from above. The surface stays matt, almost mineral. No pattern is ever repeated.
Colour blocks
One form, one colour. Cones, spheres and stacked cylinders in bold, matt shades: lemon yellow, orange, fir green, ultramarine, powder pink. On its own, each piece is a sculpture. Together, they fill a shelf like a palette.
Black clay
Outside, black stoneware left bare, with the throwing lines still showing. Inside, a luminous glaze: turquoise, deep blue, lilac, peach. The colour appears as you lean over the bowl, like the bottom of a well.
Ink
A white glaze, and black laid down in a single gesture: a run, a band, a brushstroke that cannot be redone. Teapots, bowls and dishes owe as much to drawing as to pottery. No line is the same from one piece to the next.
